| Home > About Diabetes... |
As part of our advocacy role for people with diabetes, Diabetes Australia-NSW has launched a campaign called Being Heard. The campaign provides a political voice to people with diabetes so that together we may strive for positive change.
We are working harder than ever to end discrimination against people with diabetes and to campaign for improvements in healthcare.
Some of our campaigns:
• Workplace discrimination
Diabetes Australia-NSW is looking into ways of overcoming discrimination that affect people with diabetes in the workforce. We are calling for an end to employers automatically barring people with diabetes from entering or staying in certain occupations.
• Fairer deals in insurance
Diabetes Australia-NSW is lobbying certain insurance companies to assess people with diabetes on a case-by-case basis with the aim of overcoming sweeping bans or inflated premiums.
• Training NSW Police in diabetes awareness
Diabetes Australia-NSW is liaising with NSW Police to improve their training programs with the aim of instilling police officers with diabetes awareness.
• Health Service issues
Diabetes Australia -NSW is lobbying the government for improvements in health services for people with diabetes.
We are lobbying the Minister for Health and state opposition to address the problem of staff shortages in diabetes centres, especially the shortage of diabetes educators in rural areas.
• Sharps disposal
Diabetes Australia-NSW is liaising with NSW Health to initiate, through local Councils, a statewide coordinated sharps disposal scheme across NSW.
You can be involved in Being Heard in a number of ways:
What should you do?
Write, phone or visit your local Member of Parliament or opposition candidate.
We are strongest when people with diabetes join together with one voice to deliver change. We want as many people as possible to take part in the Being Heard campaign, to leave policy-makers in no doubt that diabetes is a major issue of public concern. People with diabetes want to be heard.
