Celebrities and well-known Australians play an important role in helping Diabetes Australia-NSW increase the public’s awareness and knowledge of diabetes.
Many generously donate their time to support our campaigns.
They attend events, take part in promotional activities, endorse our messages, assist with fundraising and appear in our television campaigns.
Their support is essential and we thank all of them for their commitment.
Here is a list of actors, sports people, television presenters and other well known personalities who have done their bit for people with diabetes.
Marcia Hines
Music Diva Marcia Hines from Australian Idol has been a supporter of the Great Australian Bite for five years. In 2004, she officially launched the event and encouraged all Australians to be part of the event. Media has also spoken to her about type 1 diabetes to help raise awareness.
Peter Howard
Celebrity chef, Peter Howard has given his support to Diabetes Awareness Week in 2006 and 2007.
In 2006, he officially launched the ‘Don’t get it – Prevent it’ campaign. In 2007, he was the face of the television Community Service Announcement and all promotion material for the ‘Know your risk of type 2 diabetes’ campaign.
Justin Melvey

Australia actor and model, Justin Melvey has been one of our biggest supporters over the past four years.
In 2004, he was a contestant on the first series of Dancing with the Stars and Diabetes Australia-NSW was his charity of choice.
He continued his support that year, when he made a special guest appearance with his dance partner, Kim Johnson at the annual JellyBean Picnic.
Even while he was in America in 2005 and 2006, he continued to support the Great Australian Bite.
In 2006, he was a contestant in Celebrity Survivor and once again chose Diabetes Australia-NSW as his charity of choice.
Justin says, “Diabetes is close to my heart, and I will continue to support the cause as much as I can.”
Suzie O’Neill
Australian swimming Olympian, Suzie O’Neill supported the ‘Be Well, Know Your BGL’ campaign for National Diabetes Week in 2003.
She was the face of the campaign, including posters, scratchies and the television Community Service Announcement.

The Buzz Ball has had an enormous amount of support from Channel 7’s Sunrise crew. Melissa Doyle, David Koch and Natalie Barr have all been the Master of Ceremony at the social event in the past three years.
