The health and education division of Diabetes Australia–NSW provides education and support services to all people with diabetes, carers, the general public and health professionals.
The division is staffed by experienced health professionals who include, accredited practising dietitians, credentialled diabetes educators and exercise physiologists.
It also has people who liaise and manage special events and projects for a wide range of activities designed to educate and inform about diabetes.
Health and Education links with health professionals in diabetes – from Endocrinologists, Podiatrists and Optometrists to Pharmacy and General Practice.
Ongoing services include:
• The customer care line which operates from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday. Credentialled diabetes educators, accredited practising dietitians and exercise physiologists are available to answer questions and provide phone support.
• The diabetes kids and teens care line operates 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday. A paediatric diabetes educator is available to speak with parents, teachers, carers and kids to provide information of the management of diabetes.
• Camps for kids, teens & young adults with type 1 diabetes.
• Supermarket tours run by accredited practicing dietitians. Participants learn how to read food labels and make healthy food choices.
• Educational resources and publications for health professionals, people with or at risk of diabetes and their carers.
• JellyBean Scene and “You Said What” newsletters for kids and teens with diabetes.
• Lecture services to community groups covering topics including diabetes prevention, diabetes management, latest research, healthy eating and diabetes awareness.
• School visits that cover aspects of diabetes management relevant to teachers who have children with diabetes in their care.
• The Health Happenings newsletter, a quarterly publication for health professionals working in diabetes which provides information on Diabetes Australia–NSW activities, projects and new resources.
• Invigorate magazine, a biannual publication for people with pre-diabetes or for people at risk of diabetes
• Vitality corporate wellness program that provides strategies to develop healthy lifestyles and improve health related workplace issues.
The health and education division runs numerous support and education events throughout the year, such as the Diabetes And Diabesity Update Day for health professionals, Connect the Dots and Diabetes: a Family Affair.
